What an AI twin is

An AI twin is a saved version of your face that a generator can place into any scene you choose. People also call it an AI avatar of myself or an AI clone of me. You set it up once with 10 to 20 of your selfies. After that, you type a description or pick a preset pack, and you get new photos of yourself in those settings.

It is not a chatbot, and it is not a deepfake of a stranger. It is your own face, built from your own photos, made for your own work or social media. Once you have a photo of your twin, you can use it as a LinkedIn headshot, a travel picture, or a movie poster. On Doppelshot, you can also make that photo talk in your voice, sing a short song, or move in a 10-second vertical video.

Most single results do not even require a full twin. If you only want one portrait or one talking clip right now, a single clear selfie is enough to run a standard card in about 20 seconds. You build a full AI twin when you want consistent likeness across dozens of different scenes and packs.

What you need: the selfies

A twin is only as accurate as the photos you feed it. To create an AI twin of yourself that holds up in any light or angle, gather 10 to 20 recent photos of yourself alone.

Here is what works best:

  • Current appearance. Use recent photos where you have the same haircut and facial hair as today.
  • Good light. Daylight or soft indoor light works best. Avoid hard shadows cutting across your eyes or nose.
  • Sharp focus. Your face must be clear and easy to read.
  • Variety. Mix close-ups with waist-up shots. Include front views and three-quarter angles, both smiling and neutral expressions, and several outfits in different rooms or outdoor spots. The engine needs to learn the geometry of your face, not the wall behind you.
  • Photos taken by others. Pictures a friend took of you at normal camera distance often look more natural than arm-length mirror selfies, which can distort your nose and jaw.

The three ways to make a twin

You no longer have to wait half an hour of model training just to get a working twin. In internal tests where the same person and the same scenes were scored by the same face recogniser on a scale from 0 to 1, reference-based methods matched or beat traditional weight training.

Doppelshot offers three tiers so you can pick between speed, likeness, and file ownership. You can see the full breakdown on the twin options comparison page, and the price shows before you run on the pricing page.

1. Instant twin

Instant is the default tier. It takes your 10 to 20 selfies and uses them directly as visual references on every photo you generate. Nothing is trained in advance, and there is no waiting time. The moment your photos finish uploading, your twin is ready. In likeness testing, this method scored 0.62 out of 1, matching standard trained models without the wait. There is no creation charge to set up an Instant twin.

2. Studio twin

Studio builds a dedicated face profile in a few minutes using specialized identity models such as Phota. Because it maps your features into a structured profile before generating scenes, it produced the sharpest likeness in testing, scoring 0.70 out of 1. Studio is built for people who want the closest possible match to their real face with only a short wait. A Studio twin is included in monthly plans or available as a one-time setup.

3. Trained twin

Trained runs a full training job on your 10 to 20 selfies for about 25 to 35 minutes to create custom model weights (Ideogram V4 weights). In testing, the best trainer scored 0.66 and others scored 0.62 to 0.63. Training still earns its place for two reasons: you can download and keep the raw weights to use in other software, and the twin packs cost half on a Trained twin. A Trained twin is never included in a monthly plan and is always a separate one-time run.

Step by step

Creating an AI clone of me in the browser takes five steps from start to finish:

  1. Collect your photos. Pick 10 to 20 clear selfies taken on different days, or grab a single selfie if you just want to test a standard card first. Every new account gets one free preview photo at signup with no card required.
  2. Upload your set. In the app, open your twins and upload your photos. They go straight into a private storage bucket with no public link.
  3. Choose your tier. Pick Instant if you want to generate right away with no setup wait. Pick Studio if you have a few minutes and want the highest likeness score. Pick Trained if you want downloadable weights and half-price twin packs. The price shows before you run, and you can check all packs and plans under pricing.
  4. Pick a pack or type a scene. Once your twin is active, you can generate themed sets in one click, such as the Old Money pack or the Dating pack, or open the Your own idea card to type any custom scene and outfit you want.
  5. Turn photos into video or print. When you get a shot you like, you can keep going in the same workspace. Make the photo speak a script in your cloned voice, make it sing a 10-second jingle, animate the scene for TikTok or Reels, or upscale it up to 4x for physical printing.

Mistakes that cost likeness

When an AI avatar of myself looks slightly off, the cause is almost always in the input photos rather than the generator. Avoid these common errors:

  • Ten photos from the same minute. If you sit on your couch and take fifteen pictures in a row, the twin learns that exact lighting, head tilt, and shirt collar. When you ask for a beach or an office later, your face will look pasted in.
  • Phone filters and beauty smoothing. If your selfies have skin-smoothing filters or altered jawlines, the AI faithfully copies the filter. Your twin will look like a plastic version of you.
  • Covered faces. Sunglasses, baseball caps that cast shadows, and masks hide the bone structure around your eyes and brow. Leave them out of your upload set.
  • Group shots and crops. Uploading photos with other people in the frame confuses the face detector. Use solo shots only.
  • Only extreme close-ups. If every selfie crops tightly at your chin and forehead, the model has to guess your neck, shoulders, and build when you ask for a waist-up or full-body portrait. Include a few half-body shots so the proportions match.

Privacy: what to ask before you upload your face

Your face is biometric data. Unlike a password, you cannot replace it if a service leaks it or sells it. Before you upload 20 selfies to create an AI twin of yourself on any platform, check three things:

  • Where do the original selfies live? On Doppelshot, uploaded selfies and twin models sit in a private bucket with no public web address. When an outside AI engine generates your image, it receives the reference through a short-lived signed link solely to complete that request.
  • Does the company train its base models on customer faces? On Doppelshot, never. Your selfies are used only to build your twin and produce your results.
  • How long is the data kept, and can you wipe it? Doppelshot deletes inactive selfies and twin models automatically 90 days after their last use. You can also wipe individual photos, your twin, or your entire account immediately at any time; see the instructions on how to delete your data. The service is operated by AitekLabs, MB in Lithuania under EU GDPR rules, and every generated image carries a machine-readable AI marker in line with the EU AI Act.

FAQ

How many photos do I need to create an AI twin of myself?

You need 10 to 20 varied selfies of yourself to build an Instant, Studio, or Trained twin. If you only want a single headshot or talking video without creating a reusable twin, one clear selfie is enough for the standard cards.

How long does it take to make an AI twin?

An Instant twin is ready immediately with zero wait once your selfies upload. A Studio twin takes a few minutes to learn your face profile. A Trained twin with downloadable weights takes about 25 to 35 minutes. Standard single-selfie photos take about 20 seconds.

Do I still need to train a model on my face?

For most people, no. Instant twins use your selfies directly as references and match standard trained weights for likeness, while Studio twins score even higher after a few minutes of processing. You only need a 35-minute Trained twin if you want to download the model weights for outside tools or run the twin packs at half price.

Can I use my AI twin photos for business or social media?

Yes. Every paid result on Doppelshot includes a commercial license and comes without a visible watermark, so you can use your headshots, product shots, and vertical videos on LinkedIn, TikTok, company websites, or ads. You must be an adult (18+) and have consent for any face you upload.
